Ablakwa Promises 24-Hour Passport Service to End Delays

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has vowed to introduce a 24-hour passport issuance service to enhance efficiency and reduce long waiting times for applicants.

Speaking on TV3 on Saturday, February 8, Ablakwa emphasised that passport processing must be swift and citizen-friendly to meet international standards.

“It is unacceptable for Ghanaians to struggle with unnecessary delays in acquiring passports. My commitment is to introduce a 24-hour service that guarantees timely issuance,” he stated.

Ablakwa, who was sworn into office on Friday, February 7, acknowledged the frustrations many Ghanaians face and assured the public that urgent reforms would be implemented.

The minister outlined plans to leverage technology, expand passport processing centres, and streamline bureaucratic processes.

“We will invest in digital infrastructure, automate processes, and create additional service points to ensure quicker turnaround times,” he said.

Ablakwa also announced plans to decentralise passport offices to bring services closer to the people. According to him, this strategy will reduce congestion and ensure applicants do not have to travel long distances for their passports.

He called for cooperation between government agencies, the private sector, and the general public to ensure the success of the 24-hour service.

“This is about making life easier for Ghanaians. We are committed to creating a seamless, transparent, and efficient passport system,” he concluded.

His proposal has been welcomed by many Ghanaians, who hope the initiative will resolve the long-standing delays in passport acquisition.
