Western Regional House of Chiefs Nominate Nana Kobina Nketsia V As New President
The Western Regional House of Chiefs has officially nominated Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area, as its new president, marking the end of a five-year leadership crisis.
His nomination ushers in a period of stability and cooperation among the chiefs, enabling them to work collectively toward the region’s development.
This resolution is expected to strengthen collaboration between the government and traditional authorities in addressing key regional challenges, particularly concerning land management and natural resources.
During a courtesy visit by Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, the chiefs welcomed him warmly and commended his role in facilitating this long-awaited leadership breakthrough. Minister Buah outlined his vision for the ministry, which includes restoring forest reserves and combating illegal small-scale mining.
Speaking at the gathering, Awulae Agyefi Kwame, Paramount Chief of the Nsein Traditional Council, announced that the chiefs had unanimously chosen Nana Kobina Nketsia V as president, alongside Nana Kwesi Agyemang of Lower Dixcove as Vice President.
This leadership structure aims to bring unity and progress to the House.
Awulae Agyefi Kwame noted, “Our subjects have been concerned about the ongoing litigations among us chiefs, which have hindered development for years.
However, as the Bible says, ‘There is a time for everything,’ and we believe this is our moment to move forward.”
The chiefs, after extensive deliberations, agreed to withdraw all legal actions, allowing the House to function without further disruptions.
This move also restores Western Region’s representation at the National House of Chiefs, which had been vacant since Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II relocated to the Western North Region.
To ensure proper representation at the national level, three prominent chiefs have been selected: Awulae Angama Tuagyan (Gwira Traditional Council), Awulae Atibrukusu III (Lower Axim), and Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II (Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area).
Minister Buah expressed his gratitude for the chiefs’ unity, stating, “After my swearing-in, I received numerous invitations to visit other regions, but I chose to begin here, in my hometown. I am grateful for the warm reception and the commitment of the chiefs to progress.”
Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson also commended the resolution of the leadership crisis, emphasising that this milestone will significantly contribute to the region’s development. He lauded the chiefs for prioritising unity and regional growth over longstanding disputes.
