Tamale North legislator Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini has dismissed allegations that the Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, is being bullied and disrespected by Minority Leader and Ranking Member Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Suhuyini argues that such claims misinterpret Ahiafor’s leadership style, which he describes as measured and consultative.
Speaking on 3FM Morning Show with Johnnie Hughes on January 6, the three-term legislator and journalist emphasised that Ahiafor is not being undermined but rather embraces a leadership approach that values collective input.
“The chairman of the appointment committee may appear very liberal, but if you understand his leadership style, you will appreciate his method of fostering inclusivity,” Suhuyini stated, countering assertions that Ahiafor lacks authority over committee proceedings.
Bernard Ahiafor has been scrutinised by some committee members and observers, who argue that his leadership has led to occasional disorder and undue influence from other key members. However, Suhuyini contends that Ahiafor’s method encourages dialogue and compromise, essential components of democratic governance.
On January 8, 2025, Parliament confirmed the composition of the Appointments Committee, with Ahiafor as Chairman and Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah as Vice Chairperson.
The committee also includes Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the ranking member and Patricia Appiagyei as deputy ranking member.
While some critics claim that Ahiafor’s leadership has enabled unnecessary disruptions, Suhuyini maintains that his approach aligns with democratic principles and is vital for fair and transparent vetting.
He urges the public to consider the chairman’s approach as a demonstration of openness rather than a weakness.
