Former President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program, vowing to address its challenges and improve educational outcomes across Ghana.
Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Central Region on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Mr. Mahama emphasised that education remains one of his top priorities. He outlined strategic plans to secure dedicated funding for the Free SHS initiative and decentralise food procurement to improve efficiency.
“Education will remain a priority, and we will work to provide the best possible learning environment for our children at all levels,” Mahama stated. “And ensure that our youth have the skills needed to compete in the global economy. We plan to improve the Free SHS program by securing dedicated funding and decentralising food procurement.”

“Additionally, we will introduce a ‘no academic fees’ policy offering financial aid to continuing students and expand infrastructure for tertiary institutions,” he stated.
Mahama’s commitment to education reform comes at a crucial time when many Ghanaians have expressed concerns over funding and operational inefficiencies within the Free SHS program. His proposed initiatives aim to provide sustainable solutions that ensure long-term improvements in Ghana’s education sector.
