The management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s largest referral medical facility, has confirmed that its directive to temporarily suspend the acceptance of dead bodies and Brought-in-Dead (BID) cases at its mortuary is being strictly enforced.
Announced on Monday, February 3, the directive aims to facilitate a major refurbishment of the hospital’s mortuary facilities. The renovation, expected to last six weeks, is part of ongoing efforts to enhance service quality and address long-standing infrastructural issues.
Speaking to Citi News, the hospital’s Public Relations Unit noted that compliance with the directive has been smooth, with both hospital staff and the public cooperating fully. This cooperation, according to hospital officials, has ensured that the refurbishment process proceeds without interruptions.

The decision to suspend mortuary services stems from the deteriorating condition of the facility. Over time, the mortuary has faced severe infrastructural and capacity challenges, prompting management to take immediate action.
Renovation plans include a comprehensive upgrade of key sections of the mortuary, such as the refrigeration systems, storage compartments, and ventilation. These improvements aim to enhance efficiency, ensure proper body preservation, and create better working conditions within the facility.
A senior hospital official, speaking anonymously, revealed that the mortuary’s cooling systems had suffered periodic malfunctions, raising concerns about their ability to maintain optimal storage conditions. In light of these challenges, the hospital saw the temporary suspension of services as a necessary step toward modernisation.
Korle Bu Teaching Hospital remains committed to improving its infrastructure to better serve the public, and management has assured Ghanaians that mortuary services will resume immediately after the renovation is completed.
