A devastating fire broke out at the Kisseman Airways slum early Wednesday dawn, claiming the life of a four-month-old baby and destroying several properties.
Eyewitnesses suspect the fire was caused by an unattended candle left burning by the baby’s mother. Residents were alerted by the child’s cries, but by the time they arrived, the wooden structure was already engulfed in flames. Efforts to save the infant were unsuccessful.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) dispatched teams from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations, with the first crew reportedly arriving at 4:24 a.m.—12 minutes after receiving the distress call at 4:12 a.m.

However, some victims dispute this timeline, claiming firefighters took nearly an hour to respond.
Speaking to Citi News, affected residents appealed for government support, as they have lost their homes and belongings.
“I was asleep when I heard a child scream around 4 a.m. I rushed out to see the whole place in flames. I grabbed my children and ran for safety,” recounted Edna, a victim of the fire.
“We tried to put out the fire, but we couldn’t. All our belongings are gone. We have nowhere to go,” added Emmanuel, another victim.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire as displaced residents struggle to find shelter and recover from the tragedy.
