NUGS Gives WAEC One-Week Ultimatum Over Withheld WASSCE Results

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has issued a stern one-week ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release all withheld 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results or face mass protests across the country.

This ultimatum comes after the union expressed serious concerns regarding the treatment of candidates accused of examination malpractice.

NUGS has demanded the immediate removal of WAEC’s Ghana office head, citing what it deems as the unfair and unjust treatment of affected candidates.

The union argues that WAEC has failed to provide students with the opportunity for a fair hearing before taking actions such as withholding or cancelling their results, which they say undermines the principles of justice.

“The delay in the release of results, especially when done just before university admissions, has had dire consequences for students trying to secure placements in public universities,” stated Daniel Korley, President of NUGS, at a media briefing.

He further emphasised that these delays, alongside WAEC’s failure to release results within reasonable time frames, have affected the academic futures of thousands of students.

One of the most pressing issues highlighted by NUGS is the practice of cancelling the entire WASSCE results of students found guilty of malpractice in only one subject.

The union insists that only the affected subject should be nullified, and not the entire examination, which they argue is disproportionately harsh for students.

Additionally, NUGS decries the lack of an effective appeal process, which it says prevents students from challenging decisions made by WAEC.

These concerns were formally addressed by NUGS in a letter to WAEC, sent on January 2, 2025. However, according to the union, WAEC has not provided a satisfactory response or taken any meaningful steps to resolve the issues raised.

“The credibility of WAEC is on the line,” Korley warned. “If students lose confidence in its fairness, the entire education system will suffer.” He also made it clear that if WAEC does not address the concerns within the given timeframe, NUGS will escalate the matter, using legal and advocacy channels, including the possibility of seeking judicial intervention.

Korley assured affected students that NUGS stands firmly behind them and is committed to fighting for their rights. “Education is a fundamental right, and we will not rest until justice is served. We are calling on all students to remain calm but resolute in demanding their rights,” he added.

The union has promised to organise nationwide protests and demonstrations if WAEC does not comply with its demands, signalling an impending showdown between the students’ union and the examination body.
