Parliament Pledges Good Conduct After Speaker Lifts MP Suspensions
The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has assured Speaker Alban Bagbin that both sides of the House will uphold decorum and avoid further disruptions in parliamentary proceedings.
His pledge came after the Speaker lifted the two-week suspension imposed on four Members of Parliament (MPs) following a chaotic vetting session last week.
“We thank you for considering our appeals and lifting the suspension on our colleagues. We assure you that we will be of good behaviour going forward,” Ayariga stated.
He also expressed confidence that the Appointments Committee would now function in a more orderly manner.
On his part, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin reiterated the commitment of the minority caucus to maintain good conduct.
The suspended MPs—Minority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, and Jerry Ahmed Shaib—were sanctioned after a heated altercation erupted during a sitting of the Appointments Committee.
Despite lifting the suspension, Speaker Bagbin has established a special committee to probe the incident, affirming that the investigation will proceed as planned.
