I take full responsibility for vetting chaos – Afenyo-Markin pleads with Speaker

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has taken full responsibility for the disruptions that occurred during the vetting of ministerial nominees last week.

Addressing Parliament on February 4, 2025, the Effutu MP acknowledged the chaos that raised public concerns and pleaded with Speaker Alban Bagbin to reconsider the consequences of his decision following the incident.

This marks a shift from the minority’s earlier position that the Speaker acted beyond the Standing Orders of the House.

“Mr. Speaker, I take full responsibility as a leader on my side for all actions that took place. I will therefore conclude by inviting you, Mr. Speaker, to, in the circumstance and with assurance given, consider a recession of the decision you communicated to the house, as well as all consequential matters thereto,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

The vetting session was marred by heated exchanges, leading Speaker Bagbin to establish a special committee to investigate the matter. Additionally, four MPs—two from each side—were suspended due to their involvement in the altercation.

They include Minority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

Afenyo-Markin’s appeal signals an effort to de-escalate tensions and foster a conciliatory approach to resolving the fallout from the vetting disruptions. It remains to be seen how Speaker Bagbin will respond to the request.
