In a remarkable gesture of encouragement and support for academic excellence, Ghanaian business magnate and philanthropist Mr. Ibrahim Mahama has met with 13-year-old Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise, the youngest student ever admitted to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The meeting, which took place in Accra on Monday, February 3, 2025, brought together Melchizedek and his parents for an insightful discussion centred on education, ambition, and the future of science and technology in Ghana. Mr. Mahama, known for his commitment to youth empowerment, lauded the young prodigy for his exceptional academic performance and unwavering dedication to his studies.
Melchizedek, a native of Bole in the Savannah Region, recently made headlines after achieving an outstanding score of 5 As and 3 Bs in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at just 13 years old. His stellar performance secured him a place at KNUST, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics.
Recognising Melchizedek’s passion for science and engineering, Mr. Mahama provided him with a once-in-a-lifetime experience aboard one of his private jets. The young scholar was granted access to the cockpit while being flown back to Kumasi, where he had the opportunity to observe and learn about the technical operations of an aircraft. This experience closely aligned with his deep-rooted interest in physics and aerospace engineering.
Reflecting on the experience, Melchizedek expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This opportunity reinforces my belief that understanding the principles of physics can open doors to many fields, including aerospace engineering.” His excitement was palpable as he absorbed the real-world application of physics in aviation technology.
In addition to mentorship, Mr. Mahama made a groundbreaking pledge to fully sponsor Melchizedek’s education.
He assured the young scholar and his family that he would cover all tuition, accommodation, and essential academic expenses, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder his academic progress.
Melchizedek’s parents expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Mahama for his generosity and keen interest in their son’s future.
They emphasised how this support not only secures their child’s education but also serves as a beacon of hope for young, talented individuals in Ghana.
Encouraging the young prodigy, Mr. Mahama reiterated his commitment to nurturing brilliant minds. “Young minds like Melchizedek are the future of Ghana. It is our responsibility to support and nurture them so they can reach their full potential,” he stated.
Mr. Ibrahim Mahama’s philanthropic act underscores his dedication to fostering academic excellence and innovation in Ghana.
His support for Melchizedek highlights the crucial role that corporate leaders and philanthropists can play in shaping the future of bright, young talents in the country.
