Bharti Airtel CEO and GSMA deputy chair Gopal Vittal has been appointed as acting chair of the global telecoms industry body until after MWC Barcelona 2025, following the departure of Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete.
The GSMA confirmed in a statement that Alvarez-Pallete, who stepped down as CEO of Telefónica last month, could no longer continue as chair of its board of directors. Vittal will serve in the interim role until a permanent successor is named after MWC Barcelona 2025, scheduled for March 3-6.
The association expressed gratitude to Alvarez-Pallete for his contributions, acknowledging his impact on the industry during his tenure.
Meanwhile, Marc Murtra, the newly appointed chair and CEO of Telefónica, will now represent the Spanish operator on the GSMA board with immediate effect.
Vittal, who has been GSMA deputy chair since 2023, was reappointed to the position in October 2024, further solidifying his leadership role in the global telecom sector.
His appointment as acting chair signals continuity and stability as the industry prepares for MWC Barcelona 2025, one of the most influential events in the mobile and telecoms ecosystem.
