Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has refuted claims that Freemasonry is an occultic society, asserting that the fraternity is deeply rooted in Christian teachings and principles.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, February 2, Afenyo-Markin defended Freemasonry following public scrutiny of the group, which intensified after he questioned George Opare Addo’s membership during a vetting session. The discussion quickly gained traction on social media, with some branding Freemasonry as a secretive and cult-like organisation.
However, Afenyo-Markin dismissed these assertions, stating that Christianity is at the core of Masonic teachings.
“So, I’m telling you that this Rose Choir, Perfection Stage, the highest level of Masonry, is all about the New Testament and Christ, the teachings of Christ. It is talking about the sacrifices Christ made. And it is therefore reprehensible for anybody to say that Freemasonry is an occultic society,” he explained.
His remarks come amid renewed debate about the compatibility of Freemasonry with Christian beliefs. The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra recently reaffirmed its longstanding position that Catholics cannot be members of Masonic associations without violating Church doctrine.
In a statement signed by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie on January 27, the Church categorically stated, “You cannot be a true Catholic and a Freemason at the same time.”
Despite this, Afenyo-Markin maintained that Freemasonry aligns with Christian values, asserting that certain levels of the fraternity require a profession of faith in Christ.
“You must profess Christ to be perfected at that point… I will not belong to a society that does not accept Christ. Else I wouldn’t even talk about it. I’m not a hypocrite,” he insisted.
The debate over Freemasonry’s religious affiliations is expected to continue as public interest grows.
