Gov’t to Merge GNA And ISD- Kwakye Ofosu Reveals

Minister of State Designate, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced plans to restructure Ghana’s government communication framework by merging the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and the Information Services Department (ISD).

During his vetting on Friday, January 31, Kwakye Ofosu emphasised that the initiative aims to enhance efficiency and modernise government communication to align with technological advancements. He noted that traditional methods, particularly those employed by the ISD, have become outdated and require a strategic overhaul.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, President John Dramani Mahama envisions a restructured communication system that consolidates the ISD and GNA into a single Government Communication Office. This, he believes, will lead to improved service delivery and more effective public information dissemination.

“What has become clear is that the approaches that have been adopted over the period are no longer fit for purpose. The ISD used to have cinema vans, and now nobody will show up if you brought a cinema van to their community,” he explained.

He stressed the urgency of adapting to modern communication tools, stating, “It means that things have to change, and we have to keep pace with the rate at which technology is revolutionising information dissemination.”

Kwakye Ofosu assured that the proposed merger would not only streamline operations but also maximise the use of digital communication platforms for more effective government engagement with citizens.

“So, Mr. President has a vision of transforming the ISD and GNA by merging them into the Government Communication Office so that they will be able to deliver much better services at a more efficient rate,” he stated.
