Energy Minister John Jinapor has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to renewable energy expansion, emphasising solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects as key to the nation’s sustainable energy future.
Speaking at the Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2025 on January 31 at the Accra International Conference Centre, Jinapor outlined Ghana’s strategic shift towards green energy to meet rising demand while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The discussion, themed “Delivering Affordable, Accessible, and Sustainable Energy Solutions for Africa,” brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and energy experts to deliberate on Africa’s energy future.
“To power our economy and ensure long-term sustainability, we are prioritising renewable energy sources,” he stated, highlighting the role of solar and wind energy along with mini-hydro initiatives.
Jinapor pointed out that Ghana’s abundant sunshine, extensive coastline, and multiple rivers provide ideal conditions for renewable energy development.
Jinapor stressed that renewable energy will enhance industrialisation, lower carbon emissions, and boost energy access, particularly within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
He added that the government is working closely with stakeholders, including the private sector and international partners, to increase investments in renewable energy infrastructure and technology.
With Ghana’s electricity access rate already one of the highest in sub-Saharan Africa, Jinapor emphasised that transitioning to renewables would not only secure energy reliability but also create jobs and drive economic growth.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving its renewable energy target by integrating more green energy sources into the national grid.
“Solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects offer immense potential for Ghana to meet its energy demands while also reducing the environmental impact of fossil fuels,” he said, encouraging continued collaboration among all stakeholders to accelerate Ghana’s clean energy transition.
