Kofi Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation Designate, has announced plans to introduce tax exemptions on the importation of sports equipment to boost sports development in Ghana.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Adams stated that the initiative aims to ease the financial burden on athletes, schools, and registered clubs by making high-quality sports equipment more accessible.
“I will push for some level of tax exemption for the importation of sports equipment, either directly by athletes, schools, or registered clubs,” he said.
The proposed exemptions are expected to cover a wide range of sporting goods, including capital equipment, raw materials, spare parts, and accessories. Adams believes this measure will help increase participation in sports, improve the quality of training, and elevate competition standards in the country.
To qualify for the exemption, importers may need to meet specific conditions, such as ensuring the equipment is used solely for sports-related purposes. While the proposal is yet to be fully implemented, Adams’ pledge signals his commitment to fostering a more vibrant sports industry in Ghana.
By reducing costs associated with acquiring sports gear, the initiative could drive investment in sports infrastructure, nurture young talent, and position Ghana as a competitive force in various sporting disciplines.
