Former NPP MP Gifty Klenam Defects to NDC

Former Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim in the Eastern Region, Gifty Klenam, has officially defected to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a significant political shift ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Klenam, who previously won the Lower West Akim seat twice—in 2008 and 2012—on the ticket of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), fell out of the party’s leadership after losing her bid in the 2016 primaries.

During the 2024 campaign season, she openly supported Alan Kyerematen, who also parted ways with the NPP after failing to secure the party’s flagbearer position. Kyerematen went on to form the Movement for Change, a breakaway political movement.

Klenam’s defection to the NDC adds to the shifting political landscape as Ghana approaches the crucial 2024 elections, with realignments and cross-party endorsements influencing the race.
