Oliver Barker-Vormawor Denies Bribery Allegations Linked to Appointments Committee

Lawyers representing Oliver Barker-Vormawor, activist and organiser of Democracy Hub, have vehemently denied any connection between their client and allegations of bribery involving members of Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

The denial comes after the committee summoned Barker-Vormawor over a controversial social media post that suggested bribery within the committee.

During an appearance before the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 29, Barker-Vormawor’s lead counsel, Nana Ato Dadzie, firmly rejected the claims, stating, “The statement is fake; this is not coming from Mr. Vormawor.

He never posted that statement. The statement reads: ‘NDC members on the Appointments Committee take money from Mahama’s ministerial nominees before approving them, and the Deputy Speaker must submit himself to ORAL.’ This is not from Mr. Vormawor.”

Barker-Vormawor’s lawyers further clarified that another post on his Facebook page, which accused committee members of accepting bribes before vetting ministerial nominees, was not intended to tarnish the committee’s reputation.

According to the defence, the post was merely meant to share information from reports that Barker-Vormawor had come across, rather than make direct accusations against specific individuals.

The allegations, which stirred public debate, emerged in the lead-up to the vetting of Defence Minister-designate Dr. Edward Omane Boamah on January 28. Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Appointments Committee and 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, quickly rejected the accusations, labelling them as baseless and harmful to the integrity of the vetting process.

In response to the claims, Mr. Ahiafor instructed the Clerk of the Committee to formally invite Barker-Vormawor to present evidence supporting his allegations during a session scheduled for January 29.

The development has drawn significant attention as it continues to fuel debate about transparency in Ghana’s parliamentary vetting procedures.
