The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring consistent waste collection across the capital, despite ongoing challenges related to urbanisation.
In a January 29 interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, Gilbert Ankrah, the public relations officer of the AMA, addressed public concerns about waste management and homelessness in the city.
His statements offered insights into the assembly’s ongoing efforts to tackle these pressing issues.
Ankrah assured residents that waste collection remains a top priority for AMA, noting that refuse in areas such as Circle is cleared on a daily basis.
This follows increasing concerns over waste accumulation in the city, as urbanisation accelerates.
“We are committed to ensuring that the refuse of Accra is collected every day. If you come to Circle, waste is being cleared regularly in the areas under AMA’s jurisdiction,” Ankrah stated during the interview with Bernard Avle.
Despite the absence of a fully appointed mayor, Ankrah emphasised that operations have continued smoothly without disruption.
He explained that the assembly has implemented measures to improve waste management, even as the city’s waste accumulation challenges grow.
“We have put measures in place this year to ensure that refuse is collected every day, and we are working hard to cover more areas with greater frequency,” he added.
While waste management efforts have been bolstered, the issue of homelessness presents a more complex challenge. Ankrah acknowledged that addressing homelessness in Accra requires collaboration between multiple institutions, including social welfare agencies, and is not solely the responsibility of the AMA.
“Homelessness is a multifaceted issue, and we cannot tackle it alone. We have collaborated with the Social Welfare Department in the past, but currently, there is a lack of formal shelters,” Ankrah revealed.
He stressed the importance of continued collaboration with other social services to address the needs of the homeless population, emphasising that finding sustainable solutions will require coordinated efforts from various stakeholders.
