Court Remands Three Suspects Over 16 kg Methamphetamine Bust
An Accra High Court has remanded into lawful custody two South Africans and a Nigerian who were arrested for allegedly possessing over 16 kilograms of methamphetamine, a narcotic drug.
The suspects were apprehended at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on January 20, 2025, by officials of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).
The court, presided over by Justice Mrs. Kizita Koowa Quarshie, ordered the remand of the three female suspects until their next appearance on February 11, 2025. The court did not take their pleas, as the facts and charges were not read out during the session. Additionally, the judge advised the accused persons to secure legal representation before their next court appearance.
A senior state attorney, Mr. Watkins Adamah, argued for their remand to facilitate further investigations. He stated, “This morning, our prayer humbly is to cause the remand of the first, second, and third accused persons into the custody of the NACOC pending investigations.”
According to the prosecution, the two South African suspects allegedly transported the illicit substances through Rwanda to Ghana. The drugs were found concealed in identical suitcases in their possession.
Further investigations led to the arrest of the third suspect, a Nigerian national, who had reportedly travelled from Nigeria to Ghana to meet the two South Africans. The prosecution claims she was part of a plan to swap the suitcases containing the narcotic substances.
Mr. Adamah also stated that other individuals had been implicated in the case, and NACOC was conducting further enquiries to identify potential accomplices. Additionally, he informed the court that the Ghana Standards Authority would be required to confirm the nature of the seized substances.
Following the arguments presented by the state attorney, the court granted the request for a two-week remand to allow investigators to complete their work.
The accused persons will remain in lawful custody until their next court appearance on February 11, 2025.
