NDC’s stance on anti-gay bill hasn’t changed

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has reiterated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) remains steadfast in its support for the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, affirming that the party’s position has not wavered since the election.

His remarks come in the wake of President John Dramani Mahama’s suggestion that a government-sponsored bill would be a more effective alternative to the current Private Member’s Bill.

According to President Mahama, such an approach would enable broader consultations and foster greater national consensus on the issue.

Addressing the bishops on January 14, President Mahama further proposed the inclusion of moral and cultural teachings in school curriculums to promote Ghanaian and African values among children.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Mahama Ayariga clarified that legislative documents not finalised during the tenure of a particular Parliament or administration are often deemed lapsed.

He emphasised that this principle does not signify any shift in the NDC’s stance.

“Absolutely not. I haven’t seen anywhere, and I haven’t been involved in any discussion at which there’s a change in position,” Ayariga stated. “At this stage, we were like, ‘Can we just take it and sign? Will it be proper law? Won’t somebody challenge the procedure we are using, saying its life has elapsed? For most documents, once they don’t come into force during the life of Parliament and the tenure of the President, they are considered elapsed.”

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reiterated his unwavering commitment to ensuring that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, is passed into law in 2025.

The bill, which has generated extensive debate and scrutiny, seeks to outlaw LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana and promote what it describes as Ghanaian family and cultural values. The NDC’s consistent backing for the bill underscores its alignment with the sentiments of many Ghanaians advocating for its passage.
