Chieftaincy Dispute Sparks Violent Clashes in Ngama Gberuk, North East Region

The once-peaceful community of Ngama Gberuk in the Bunkpurugu district of the North East Region has been thrown into turmoil following violent clashes between two local clans, the Nandouk Teeb and Maan Teeb, over chieftaincy titles.

The conflict erupted after members of both clans attended enskinment ceremonies in Binde, the seat of the Pibrana, the Paramount Chief of the area. The traditional ceremonies, meant to formalise the installation of chiefs, were initially marked by celebrations and community pride.

However, tragedy struck as the newly enskinned chiefs and their supporters made their way back to Ngama Gberuk. According to eyewitnesses, the group was ambushed by unidentified gunmen before reaching their destination.

The attackers reportedly opened fire, causing widespread panic. Several individuals were injured, with some sustaining gunshot wounds and others hurt while fleeing the chaos.

The violence escalated as houses, livestock, and personal belongings were set ablaze, leaving a trail of destruction. Many families have been displaced, seeking refuge in neighbouring communities.

The clashes have fuelled fears of further violence, with reports of retaliatory gunfire erupting in parts of the area. The situation remains tense, and many residents are afraid to leave their homes, worried about potential reprisals.

Local authorities and traditional leaders have yet to issue statements addressing the violence, but calls for calm are expected as efforts to mediate the conflict take shape. The incident highlights the recurring challenges of chieftaincy disputes in Ghana, which often have deep historical and cultural roots.

Security agencies are anticipated to intervene to restore order and prevent further escalation. For now, the residents of Ngama Gberuk remain on edge, hoping for a resolution to the conflict that has upended their lives.
