“Throwing Accusations Freely in Public Can Only Serve One Negative” Purpose”—Fatimatu Abubakar Warns NPP Members

Former Minister for Information Fatimatu Abubakar has strongly cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against airing grievances and pointing fingers publicly following the party’s defeat in the December 2024 general elections.

She stressed that such actions only fuel division and disunity within the party, hindering any efforts to regroup and strategise for future success.

In an interview with Asempa FM on Friday, January 24, 2025, Abubakar expressed her concern over the public blame game that has ensued after the electoral loss.

She described this behaviour as counterproductive, emphasising that internal matters should be addressed within the party’s structures rather than aired in public.

“Throwing accusations freely in public can only serve one negative purpose: building mistrust and disunity. What if those accused also decide to respond? They too have strong followings in the party and beyond. But where does that lead us?” Abubakar questioned, highlighting the destructive nature of public finger-pointing.

Abubakar further urged those feeling frustrated by the party’s performance to use internal channels to voice their concerns. “If you truly love the NPP, you will cover it when you believe it is naked. You will fix it when you think it is broken, and you will lift it up when you see it down,” she remarked, emphasising the importance of loyalty and unity.

The comments come at a time when the NPP is grappling with the aftermath of its defeat. The party’s National Council has responded by forming a fact-finding committee, headed by former Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye.

The committee is tasked with investigating the causes behind the electoral loss and recommending strategies for the party’s revitalization in preparation for the 2028 elections.

Abubakar called on all party members to support the committee’s efforts, cautioning against public criticisms that could undermine its work. “We must all focus on reflection, regrouping, and recapturing power in the shortest possible time. But how we go about it matters greatly,” she emphasised.

In addition, Abubakar warned against using media outlets to discuss internal party issues, stating that doing so harms the party’s image and deepens existing divisions. “If you jump from radio station to radio station, TV to TV, and social media to social media to discuss all that you perceive to be wrong with our Party and play the blame game with it, ask yourself what your motive is and what you seek to achieve,” she urged.

Fatimatu Abubakar concluded by reminding members that the party’s strength lies in unity. She urged them to rise above the blame game and focus on collective action to rebuild the party. “Heroes are not made from those who lament to lambast but from those who find the courage to lead in the needed effort to make the Party rise again. We rise together and fall together. But rise is what we must and shall!”
