Hannah Tetteh Appointed UN Special Representative for Libya

Former Ghanaian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hannah Serwaa Tetteh, has been appointed as the United Nations Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The announcement was made on January 25, 2025, through a post on the United Nations’ Ghana Facebook page, which stated:
“Congratulations to Ms. Hannah Serwaa Tetteh of Ghana on her appointment by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres as his Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).”

Tetteh becomes the 10th individual to hold this position since its establishment in 2011, succeeding Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who served until May 2024.

Hannah Tetteh brings decades of experience in diplomacy, governance, and peacebuilding to her new role. As Ghana’s foreign minister from 2013 to 2017, she chaired the Council of Ministers and the Mediation and Security Council of ECOWAS, demonstrating a deep commitment to fostering regional peace and security.

Prior to her tenure as foreign minister, she served as Ghana’s minister of trade and industry, where she played a key role in driving economic initiatives. Tetteh also represented the Awutu Senya West Constituency in Parliament from 2013 to 2017.

On the international stage, she has been actively involved in peacebuilding, notably as a co-facilitator of the High-Level Forum for the Revitalisation of the South Sudan Peace Agreement.

Tetteh’s academic credentials include a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana, and she was called to the Bar in 1992. Over the years, she has continued to expand her influence in international relations.

She served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa and as the Special Representative to the African Union, further solidifying her reputation as a seasoned diplomat.

This new role as the special representative for Libya places Tetteh at the forefront of efforts to stabilise a nation grappling with years of conflict and unrest. Her extensive experience in mediation and her track record of fostering peace and regional integration will be critical as she leads the UNSMIL.

Hannah Tetteh’s appointment not only highlights her capabilities but also serves as a proud moment for Ghana, showcasing its contributions to global diplomacy and peacebuilding efforts.
