Michael Essien: Thomas Partey Is a Better Midfielder Than I Was

Former Ghana international Michael Essien has admitted that Arsenal’s Thomas Partey is a superior midfielder compared to himself during his playing days.

Essien, widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders during his time with Chelsea, made the surprising revelation during an interview with Sporty FM.

“Between myself and Thomas Partey in our prime, I don’t think I would pick myself,” Essien admitted. “I would go for Partey. He is a fantastic midfielder, you know. He is a talented player making waves in Europe.”

Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020, has become a key figure for both the Gunners and Ghana’s national team, where he serves as deputy captain.

Essien, who enjoyed a glittering career with Chelsea, winning the UEFA Champions League and two Premier League titles, praised Partey’s skills and expressed his admiration for the Arsenal star.

“He is one player I’d like to play alongside, but it will never happen,” Essien said. “It is their time at the Black Stars now, so we have to support them, and hopefully, they can take it from where we left off.”

Essien began his European career at Bastia and Lyon before earning legendary status at Chelsea, where his combative style, versatility, and world-class performances made him a fan favourite.

His endorsement of Partey reflects the growing reputation of the Arsenal midfielder as one of Africa’s finest players on the global stage.
