The Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho, Hon. Nana Asafo-Adjei-Ayeh, has called on the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, to prioritise the continuation of the Year of Return initiative introduced by the previous government.
Addressing Parliament during the approval of ministerial nominees, Hon. Asafo-Adjei-Ayeh emphasised the importance of sustaining the initiative to boost Ghana’s tourism sector and enhance its global reputation.
According to the MP, the Year of Return, which was launched by the Akufo-Addo administration, played a significant role in attracting foreign tourists and investors to Ghana.
He noted that building on the initiative’s success could yield even greater benefits for the country.
“This will help the tourism industry and also put the country on the globe,” he remarked, adding that such initiatives are vital to making Ghana a preferred destination for tourists and investors alike.
Hon. Asafo-Adjei-Ayeh further urged the tourism minister to preserve and improve upon policies that have already proven beneficial, ensuring continuity for the greater good of the nation.
The Year of Return, launched in 2019, commemorated the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in the Americas and aimed to encourage members of the African diaspora to return to Ghana. It has since been widely lauded for its impact on tourism and cultural exchange.
The MP’s call reflects growing advocacy for the government to maintain successful initiatives that position Ghana as a leader in Africa’s tourism and cultural development.
