Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticised the establishment of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, calling it “illegal and unconstitutional.”
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on January 21, 2025, during the debate on the first batch of vetted ministers, Afenyo-Markin urged Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Justice Minister-Designate, to reassess the committee’s operations and ensure that state institutions are allowed to carry out their mandated roles without interference.
Afenyo-Markin argued that the formation of the ORAL committee undermines Ghana’s democratic principles.
He stressed that bypassing established institutions with specific mandates, such as the police, the judiciary, and the courts, could erode public confidence in the country’s governance system.
In his address, Afenyo-Markin emphasised the need to adhere to democratic and constitutional norms, advising the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government not to repeat the mistakes of the previous administration.
He cautioned against any actions that could undermine due process, especially when it comes to issues of justice and governance.
“Mr. Speaker, that so-called ORAL committee claiming to be going after loot must be cautioned that that committee is unconstitutional and illegal,” Afenyo-Markin stated. He added, “I pray that my respected colleague, Dr. Dominic Ayine, after taking office, will review the activities of this illegal, unconstitutional body.”
He further called for a return to order, insisting that Ghana’s state institutions, which are properly clothed with the authority to investigate, prosecute, and follow due process, must be allowed to do their work.
Afenyo-Markin warned that any interference with these institutions could be harmful to the country’s democracy.
He also reminded the government to be mindful of the future, saying, “Today, you are in government; tomorrow you will be in opposition. Do unto others as in all situations you wish them to do unto you.” The minority leader cautioned the NDC against repeating past mistakes and instead encouraged them to focus on pursuing justice for all, not just a select few.
