The Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng, has called for an immediate and thorough investigation following a deadly confrontation between illegal miners and military personnel in Obuasi that resulted in seven fatalities.
The incident occurred on Saturday night, January 18, around 11:00 PM, when a group of approximately 60 illegal miners attempted to breach the security fence surrounding the Deep Decline area of the Obuasi mine. Armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, and other tools, the miners reportedly opened fire on military personnel when confronted.
Kwarteng, deeply saddened by the loss of life, has expressed his concerns about the incident and emphasised the importance of accountability. In a statement issued to the media, he shared that he has been in contact with both the Divisional Police Command and the Municipal Police Command. According to Kwarteng, both agencies have assured him that investigations into the matter are currently underway.
“I have been assured by the Divisional Police Command and the Municipal Police Command that investigations are being conducted into the unfortunate loss of lives and injuries to others,” Kwarteng said. “I trust that the military command is also reviewing the incident to uncover the details of what led to this tragic event.”
Kwarteng stressed the significance of ensuring transparency in the investigation process and stated that the findings should be presented directly to President John Dramani Mahama.
“It is my expectation that the security agencies will present the findings of their reviews and investigations to His Excellency the President, John Dramani Mahama,” he added.
The MP also urged the government to expedite the investigative process to ensure justice for the victims and their families. He emphasised the need for swift action to ensure that the law takes its course and that those responsible for the violence are held accountable.
“As a representative of Obuasi, I urge the government to act swiftly on the findings of this investigation,” Kwarteng concluded. “Once again, my deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.”
President John Dramani Mahama has already ordered a comprehensive investigation into the deadly clash, underscoring the importance of transparency and justice in handling such sensitive matters. The investigation will seek to uncover the full details surrounding the confrontation and determine what led to the tragic loss of life.
This incident has further highlighted the tensions in Obuasi, a region known for its gold mining activities, where illegal mining, or “Galamsey,” has been a persistent issue. The situation has sparked calls for more effective security measures and a crackdown on illegal mining operations that put both miners and security personnel at risk.
The government and security agencies are under increasing pressure to address the ongoing crisis and prevent future violent confrontations in mining areas.
