Mahama’s use of Brother’s private jet comes at no Cost to taxpayers – Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, acting spokesperson to President John Dramani Mahama, has defended the president’s use of a private jet owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for recent official trips to Senegal and The Gambia.

The arrangement, which has drawn public criticism, has been clarified as a cost-free alternative to the official presidential jet.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, the private jet has been available to President Mahama since before the 2024 general elections, ensuring no burden on the taxpayer.

He further assured that this option reflects the President’s commitment to the prudent management of public funds amid Ghana’s challenging economic circumstances.

“The most critical point is that this alternative arrangement has not in any way, shape, or form cost the Ghanaian taxpayer a dime. President Mahama is mindful of the precarious economic situation and is committed to utilising public funds prudently,” Kwakye Ofosu stated during an interview with TV3.

The spokesperson also explained that the official presidential aircraft is currently under review by the Communications Squadron, the Air Force unit responsible for its operation. This ongoing review necessitated the temporary use of the private jet, with the assurance that President Mahama will revert to the official aircraft once the review is completed.

Kwakye Ofosu emphasised that the President remains focused on achieving the best outcomes for the country, particularly during economically challenging times.

“President Mahama is dedicated to addressing the needs of Ghanaians while ensuring the judicious use of public resources. The private jet use was a practical and cost-effective solution under the current circumstances,” he added.

The explanation comes amid heightened scrutiny of government spending, with the public keen on holding leaders accountable for fiscal responsibility during tough economic periods.
