Fear has gripped residents of Kraboa-Coaltar in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region following a violent attack by suspected land guards on Thursday.
The invasion left one person dead, six others injured, and the community in a state of terror.
The attack, which residents claim was orchestrated by land guards allegedly brought in by the Coaltar chief, Barima Okekrebesi Asiedu II, has forced many to flee their homes. Those who remain are locked indoors, afraid for their safety.
Ebenezer Ofori, the assemblyman for the area, expressed his concerns during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, describing the unsettling atmosphere.
“We are predominantly farmers, but everyone is locked up in their homes. Some have fled, and even as the leader, I am not safe,” he revealed.
The incident, which involved indiscriminate gunfire, resulted in the death of a resident who was reportedly caught in the crossfire while returning from a nearby toilet. The injured victims are receiving treatment at local health facilities.
Mr. Ofori disclosed that this is not the first time residents have endured such attacks, as the area has long been plagued by land guard invasions and sand-winning activities that destroy farmlands.
“I have been a victim myself and faced numerous threats, particularly from the Dabrihene of Coaltar,” he said, attributing the unrest to long-standing disputes over land ownership and illegal activities.
The assemblyman has appealed to the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Nana Amoatia Ofori Panin, to intervene and restore peace. He also called on the police to expedite investigations and hold perpetrators accountable.
“No arrests have been made yet, but I will engage the District Police Commander to demand immediate action,” Mr. Ofori stated.
With livelihoods disrupted and safety in jeopardy, residents of Kraboa-Coaltar are demanding swift action to address the growing insecurity. Many fear that without urgent intervention, the violence will escalate, leaving the community in further disarray.
For now, the once-thriving farming community remains in a state of fear, uncertainty, and despair.
