Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has urged the government to allocate at least 20% of the national budget to education as Haruna Iddrisu assumes the role of minister-designate for education.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, January 16, 2025, Mr. Asare stressed the importance of aligning Ghana’s education budget with international standards, such as UNESCO’s recommendation of a 15-20% allocation to education.
“We expect the minister to champion a budget increase to at least 20% of public expenditure. This is critical to achieving the 140 education promises in the NDC manifesto within the first year,” he stated.
The NDC manifesto outlines ambitious plans for education reform, including improving infrastructure, teacher conditions, and learning outcomes across all levels. Achieving these goals, Mr. Asare noted, hinges on sufficient financial backing.
Mr. Asare also called for an education conference to bring together stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, and civil society, to collaborate on solutions to systemic challenges.
“This forum will allow the new minister to align priorities with stakeholders and ensure collective ownership of the education agenda,” he added.
