Security Guard Sentenced to Six Months for Stealing Mattresses

An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan has sentenced a 23-year-old security guard, David Nanbur, to six months of imprisonment for stealing mattresses valued at approximately $575 from his employer’s house.

Nanbur pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of stealing and malicious damage, leading to his conviction by Magistrate Mrs. M.M. Olagbenro.

In her ruling, the magistrate offered the defendant the option to pay a fine of $38 to the Oyo State Government instead of serving the prison term.

Additionally, an alternative punishment of one month’s community service was made available.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Foluke Adedosu, the incident occurred on January 5 at around 11:50 am at Babalola Estate in the Odo-Ona Elewe area of Ibadan. The convict broke into his employer’s residence, owned by Mr. Yusuf Kunle, by damaging the ceiling—an act valued at $38. Once inside, he stole three mattresses with a combined value of approximately $575.

The offences were said to contravene Sections 390 (9), 412, and 451 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State.

Magistrate Olagbenro emphasised that the sentence was intended to serve as a deterrent to others. Nanbur’s conviction underscores the legal consequences of breaching trust and damaging property.
