Suggestions are growing that Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, may be appointed Majority Leader in the 9th Parliament.
This follows the nomination of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the current Majority Leader and MP for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, as Minister of Finance.
Dr. Forson’s vetting by the Appointments Committee on Monday signals his possible confirmation as finance minister. If approved, he may not be able to combine his ministerial duties with the role of Majority Leader, necessitating a new leader for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus.
Mahama Ayariga’s name has emerged as a strong contender for the position. Graphic Online understands that his potential nomination is under consideration by the NDC leadership. Ayariga’s extensive experience in governance and law, coupled with his political track record, positions him as a natural successor.
Mahama Ayariga, born on May 24, 1974, is a lawyer and seasoned politician. He holds a Master of Law (LLM) from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Ghana, Legon.
Ayariga has served in various capacities, including Minister of Information and Media Relations and Minister of Youth and Sports under the John Dramani Mahama administration. He began his political career in 2005 as MP for Bawku Central, reclaiming the seat in 2012 after a brief hiatus.
Beyond politics, Ayariga has contributed to academia and civil society. He was a teaching assistant in natural resources law and international law at the University of Ghana and co-founded the Legal Resources Centre, an organisation championing human rights and social justice.
Dr. Forson became the NDC caucus leader in January 2023, succeeding Haruna Iddrisu as part of a restructuring initiative by the NDC. His nomination as finance minister, however, has opened the door for Ayariga’s potential rise to majority leader, with support even from members of the opposition.
