The statue, unveiled on November 6, 2024, to honour the former president, has faced controversy and repeated damage since its installation. In December 2024, it underwent repairs after a gaping hole appeared in the back of its left leg.

Eyewitnesses reported that repairs were conducted on December 18, 2024, by a team of three individuals under police security. However, the restoration did little to quell the community’s concerns.

The statue has been a point of debate among residents of Sekondi, with many questioning its appropriateness and timing given the region’s pressing developmental challenges.

Some locals suspect the repeated damage to the statue is not coincidental but a reflection of dissatisfaction with its installation.

Authorities are investigating the incident to identify those responsible for the destruction. However, no arrests have been made as of now.
