Mahama to Launch Probe Into National Cathedral Project

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to investigate the National Cathedral Project, a controversial initiative launched by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a national Christian worship centre and a symbol of Ghana’s religious heritage.

The project has faced allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement, sparking public outcry over its execution and the use of public funds.

Speaking at a Christian National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), President Mahama expressed concerns about the project’s financial implications amid Ghana’s current economic challenges.

“On the vexed issue of the National Cathedral, CHRAJ directed the government to audit the project and investigate any misuse of public funds. We will soon activate an investigation into the project,” he announced.

President Mahama criticised the cost of the project, which is reported to be approximately $400 million. He drew comparisons with the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, which was completed at a significantly lower cost of $30 million.

“In the current circumstances that Ghana is going through, it makes no sense to achieve such a project at a whopping sum of $400 million,” he said.

The announcement signals the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in national projects. By activating an investigation into the National Cathedral, President Mahama aims to address concerns about the prudent use of public funds and the integrity of those involved in the project.

The probe will likely focus on the allocation and management of funds, adherence to procurement laws, and the overall financial viability of the initiative.

The planned investigation comes at a time when Ghana is grappling with significant economic challenges, including rising debt and calls for prudent public expenditure. Critics of the project have argued that the funds allocated to the cathedral could be better used to address pressing issues such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.

By prioritising transparency and fiscal responsibility, the Mahama administration aims to rebuild public trust and ensure that national resources are managed effectively for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
