The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejura Sekyeredumase, Bawa Braimah, has urged for an autopsy to be conducted on the body of a resident who allegedly died while in police custody.
The death of Masawudu, widely known as Cantona, has sparked outrage and protests in the community.
Cantona was arrested under suspicion of purchasing a stolen phone and was taken to the Ejura Police Station for questioning.
However, he was later pronounced dead at the Ejura Government Hospital, with his family and community members accusing the police of subjecting him to brutal treatment that led to his death.
The MP, speaking to JoyNews, condemned the incident, labelling it “unfortunate,” and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
He added that the family’s demand for transparency and accountability is justified, and the autopsy will shed light on the truth.
“The community is in pain and confusion. We need to know whether this was a case of police brutality or if there were other factors involved in his death. An autopsy is essential to bring clarity,” Braimah said.
The family of the deceased has also supported the call for an autopsy, expressing their desire to know the exact cause of death. One family member stated, “We want to know what happened to our son. If he was beaten to death or if he died from something else, we have a right to know.”
In response to the growing tension, the Ghana Police Service has promised to cooperate with the autopsy process and ensure a thorough investigation into the incident. However, as of now, the community remains on edge, demanding justice for Cantona.
The unrest in the area has escalated, with some residents taking matters into their own hands by setting the local police station on fire in protest.
The authorities are now under pressure to swiftly resolve the case and restore calm to the area.
