A bus travelling from Garu in the Upper East Region to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region came under attack on Saturday night when gunmen ambushed it at Pusi-Namoo, near Bolgatanga.

The injured were immediately rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga for treatment.

Although the motive for the ambush is yet to be confirmed, sources suggest the attack could be connected to the ongoing Bawku Conflict, a protracted chieftaincy dispute that has triggered violent clashes in the region.

The police have since taken control of the crime scene and launched investigations to apprehend the perpetrators. Authorities are also working to determine the precise circumstances leading to the attack.

This ambush follows a deadly clash in Bawku on Friday, which claimed two lives in the Kpalore-Gozesi area. Security forces arrested four individuals and seized eight assault rifles in connection with that incident.

The Friday clash and Saturday’s ambush have heightened fears in the region, with the total death toll from the renewed Bawku Conflict rising to 41 since October 2024.

Despite the enforcement of a dawn-to-dusk curfew, the Upper East Region remains volatile. Many communities have resorted to self-imposed isolation, and residents live in constant fear of violence.

Security agencies have intensified patrols in the affected areas to maintain order and ensure the safety of residents and travelers. Authorities are appealing for calm and cooperation as efforts to resolve the conflict continue.
