Three Killed in Police Shooting During Alleged Galamsey Raid in Ahafo Region

Tragedy struck in the Ahafo Region on Wednesday evening when police officers shot and killed three individuals during a raid on an illegal mining (galamsey) operation.

The incident occurred around 7:00 PM at the Newmont Ahafo South mines, where a group of eight individuals was reportedly engaging in illegal mining activities.

According to eyewitness reports, the group attempted to flee upon spotting police officers, prompting a chase. Police officers, in pursuit, fired indiscriminately, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. Five others were also injured by gunshots and are currently receiving medical treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the St. Elizabeth Hospital mortuary for further examination.

The incident has sparked outrage in Acherensua, with local youth taking to the streets in protest. Demonstrators have blocked major roads, demanding justice for the victims and calling for accountability in the handling of the situation.

The police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident, and investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
