Businessman Granted Bail for Defrauding 18 Rent Seekers of Over GH₵100,000

A 48-year-old businessman, Jennings Tetteh Cole, has been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding 18 rent seekers of over GH₵100,000. Facing 18 counts of defrauding by false pretences, Jennings has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The accused has been granted bail in the amount of GH₵150,000. However, according to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Ramata Asumah, Jennings has yet to refund any of the money collected from his victims, despite earlier promises to do so.

Chief Inspector Asumah revealed that the complainants, all seeking rental accommodation in different parts of Accra, fell victim to Jennings’ scheme between October 21, 2024, and December 7, 2024. Jennings, a resident of Nungua, allegedly advertised a dilapidated single room for rent on the Jiji trading app.

The complainants contacted him individually and paid amounts ranging from GH₵3,000 to GH₵9,200, totalling GH₵100,060, under the assurance that the room would be renovated and rented to them.

However, Jennings reportedly failed to honour his promise and went into hiding, providing various excuses for the delay. On December 8, 2024, some of the complainants met and discovered that Jennings had rented the same room to all of them.

The victims reported the matter to the Nungua Police, leading to Jennings’ arrest. During interrogation, he admitted to the crime in his caution statement. The prosecution disclosed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend an alleged accomplice.

The case, presided over by Mr. Bright Samuel Acquah, has been adjourned to January 20, 2025. The court instructed the prosecution to file its disclosures ahead of the next hearing.
