We can encourage Burkinabe leader to embrace democracy – Joyce Bawah

Special Aide to President John Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has described Burkinabe leader Ibrahim Traoré’s decision to carry a sidearm during a presidential inauguration ceremony as potentially yielding positive results, despite the controversy it sparked.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday, January 8, Madam Bawah Mogtari acknowledged the public’s concerns but suggested that Ghana’s warm reception of Traoré might encourage him to embrace democratic governance.

“You know, this is also a country with a very delicate history, and there are all sorts of things at play. If there is anybody who can get him to actually rescind his decision to continue as a military leader, Ghana has its own history. If we want to encourage him to return to democracy, I’m sure this could be a great way. You can still go to the polls and lead your country with whatever flair and pageantry you want,” she stated.

Madam Bawah Mogtari also assured the public that thorough security checks were conducted before any invited guest was allowed into the event’s perimeter.

“While I found it a bit awkward to see the gun on him, I’m confident that all necessary security protocols were followed,” she said, addressing criticisms about Traoré’s armed presence on the presidential platform.

President Ibrahim Traoré’s appearance at the ceremony, during which he carried a sidearm while exchanging pleasantries with the newly elected president, has sparked widespread debate. Critics questioned the appropriateness of his actions at a formal diplomatic event.

Madam Bawah Mogtari expressed her own discomfort but noted that such incidents could serve as opportunities for diplomatic engagement.

Reflecting on Ghana’s own history with transitions of power, she argued that Ghana is well-positioned to influence leaders like Traoré toward democratic governance.

“This could be a pivotal moment to encourage him to return to democracy. Ghana’s example can show that you can lead your country with pride and dignity through democratic means,” she added.
