Gbese Stool Warns Against Unauthorised Construction on Kantamanto Lands

The Gbese Stool, led by Paramount Chief Nii Ayi Bonte II, has issued a stern warning to individuals attempting to construct wooden structures on the disputed Katamanto lands, emphasising that the property is not government-owned.

At a press conference, Nii Ayi Bonte II reaffirmed the Gbese Stool’s ownership of the land, announcing plans to partner with investors to develop the area into a modern facility.

He stressed that unauthorised rebuilding activities, particularly in the aftermath of the recent fire disaster, would not be tolerated.

To safeguard their claim and prevent unauthorised activities, the Gbese Stool has established a task force to oversee the removal of unapproved structures from the property.

“The land has an owner, so no one should take the law into their hands and build any wooden structures. We will not accept this attitude again,” the chief stated.
He added, “We are bringing in investors from April to transform the place. Anyone who has put up structures without our permission should pull them down, as the task force will ensure compliance.”

While expressing condolences to victims of the devastating fire that swept through Kantamanto Market on January 2, 2025, Nii Ayi Bonte II urged traders to cooperate with the Stool’s development agenda to ensure a sustainable future.

The fire destroyed thousands of stalls, leaving traders grappling with immense losses. Many traders, who had invested their life savings into their businesses, were seen rummaging through the rubble, hoping to recover any salvageable items.

The Kantamanto Market, renowned for its bustling atmosphere and variety of goods, now stands as a scene of heartbreak and despair.

The Gbese Stool’s plan to bring in investors aims to prevent such tragedies in the future by redeveloping the market into a safer, modern facility. Local leaders and stakeholders have called for unity among traders and the community to support these efforts for long-term benefits.
