South Dayi MP Criticises EC Officials Over Conduct in 2024 Elections
Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Member of Parliament for South Dayi, has voiced strong criticism of some Electoral Commission (EC) officials over their handling of the 2024 general elections, alleging bias and a lack of professionalism.
In an interview on TV3 on Saturday, December 28, Dafeamekpor questioned the impartiality of certain EC officials and urged those unable to execute their duties fairly to resign and pursue other interests.
“I am questioning the conduct of some EC officials. They cannot apply the rules differently when it suits them,” he remarked. “If you cannot do the job, go and be a party foot soldier. All we are saying is that the proper thing should be done.”
The MP’s comments come in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn a High Court ruling concerning the recollation of results in several disputed constituencies.
Meanwhile, Kwame Andy Appiah Kubi, MP for Asante Akim North and a legal practitioner, commended the Supreme Court for its decision to overturn the High Court ruling.
He emphasised that the lower court should have given the National Democratic Congress (NDC) an opportunity to present its case before passing judgement.
“The Supreme Court did a good job. The High Court ought to have allowed the NDC to make their case,” Appiah Kubi stated during a discussion on The Key Points.
The apex court’s ruling has ordered the Accra High Court to reconsider the NDC’s mandamus application relating to disputed results in Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South.
The South Dayi MP’s criticisms highlight ongoing concerns about the EC’s role in managing electoral disputes. He argued that fairness and adherence to due process are crucial in maintaining public confidence in Ghana’s electoral system.
“The credibility of our elections depends on the integrity of those managing it,” Dafeamekpor stated, urging the EC to ensure its actions are above reproach.
