Kufuor’s Spokesperson Blames Akufo-Addo for NPP’s 2024 Defeat

Frank Agyekum, spokesperson for former President John Agyekum Kufuor, has partly blamed President Akufo-Addo for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) crushing defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) triumphed over the NPP with a margin of over 1.6 million votes, a loss Mr. Agyekum attributes to growing public dissatisfaction and internal missteps within the party.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr. Agyekum highlighted a combination of factors, including perceived arrogance among party members, economic hardships, and the imposition of unpopular candidates on constituencies.

“The signs were clear. The narrative shows things have been falling apart for a long time. We ignored the warnings and failed to take corrective actions, leading us to this point,” he said.

According to Mr. Agyekum, President Akufo-Addo, as the party leader, must accept responsibility for the loss. “The leader always bears the ultimate responsibility—it stops with him. When things go well, he gets credit; when they go poorly, he must share the blame,” he remarked.

Mr. Agyekum also criticised the selection of candidates for both the presidential and parliamentary races, describing them as “less than ideal.”

He pointed out that the disconnect between the party leadership and grassroots supporters exacerbated the situation.

“There was arrogance, there was hardship, and those in power seemed unaware of the growing discontent. This disconnect likely contributed to our significant defeat,” he added.
