CEO of Atta Mills Institute challenges new government to deliver on promises
As President John Dramani Mahama (JDM) and his administration assume office, the Atta Mills Institute, led by Samuel Koku Anyidoho, is calling for bold and unwavering accountability in governance.
The institute has pledged to monitor the new government’s promises and ensure they are delivered effectively, positioning itself as a watchdog for transparency and good governance in Ghana.
The JDM administration has made high-profile commitments, including abolishing key taxes within the first 120 days. These include:
- E-Levy: Tax on electronic transactions.
- Betting Tax: Tax on betting and gaming activities.
- COVID Tax: Introduced to support pandemic relief efforts.
- Emissions Tax: Tax on vehicle and industrial emissions.
The Atta Mills Institute has vowed to scrutinise the government’s progress in delivering on these promises, ensuring Ghanaians receive the relief they were promised during the election campaign.
To track government performance, the institute plans to launch a scientifically backed performance index that evaluates progress in critical areas:
- Economic Growth: GDP, inflation, and employment.
- Education: Free SHS access, teacher training, and infrastructure.
- Healthcare: Establishing the Ghana Medical Care Fund and improving healthcare facilities.
- Anti-Corruption: Investigating and prosecuting corruption cases.
“This index will ensure we move beyond rhetoric and hold leaders accountable with facts and data,” Samuel Koku Anyidoho emphasised.
The institute’s leadership has highlighted the importance of critiquing policies rather than engaging in personal attacks.
This approach ensures that discourse remains constructive and focused on improving governance outcomes.
“Our duty is to focus on issues that matter to Ghanaians, not on distractions. Constructive feedback is the best way to ensure effective policies,” Koku Anyidoho stated.
Acknowledging the transformative power of the youth, the Atta Mills Institute is committed to empowering young people through town hall meetings and public lectures. By fostering a culture of accountability among the youth, the institute aims to create a future where good governance is the norm.
Mr. Anyidoho has urged the institute to compile comprehensive data on the current state of all government sectors being handed over to the new administration.
“We need a clear record of what is being inherited so we can fact-check and expose any attempts to deceive Ghanaians,” he declared.
The Atta Mills Institute is urging all citizens to join in holding the government accountable.
“Ghana’s development depends on leaders who deliver and on citizens who demand action,” Anyidoho stated.
As the new administration begins its tenure, the Atta Mills Institute’s mission to promote transparency, engage the youth, and track government promises sets a powerful example. With a focus on facts, data, and civic empowerment, the institute is ensuring that promises made are promises kept.
