NPP sacks Cynthia Morrison and 279 others

The Agona West Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has sacked 280 members, including sitting Member of Parliament Cynthia Morrison, following allegations of actions that undermined the party’s unity.

The decision, effective December 16, 2024, was unanimously agreed upon at an Expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting on December 15.

In a statement issued by Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the constituency chairman, the expelled members are prohibited indefinitely from:

  • Identifying as members of the NPP.
  • Holding any leadership roles within the party.
  • Participating in party meetings or events.
  • Using party symbols, flags, or any associated insignia.

The decision followed a series of complaints from party members about the conduct of those expelled. Allegations included:

  • Running as independent candidates in the recent parliamentary election.
  • Declaring support for rival political parties.
  • Endorsing or campaigning for independent candidates against NPP-backed contenders.

According to Alhaji Tanko, the move aligns with the NPP constitution, which mandates disciplinary action against members who engage in acts of disloyalty or sabotage.

“This decision was not taken lightly but was necessary to uphold the values and unity of the NPP. Discipline is the cornerstone of any successful organisation, and we are committed to enforcing it,” he stated.

The inclusion of Cynthia Morrison, the incumbent MP, in the expulsion has sent shockwaves through the constituency. As a prominent figure in the party, her removal reflects the seriousness of the party’s stance on internal loyalty and discipline.

The mass expulsion is likely to reshape the political dynamics in Agona West. While some party members view the action as a bold step toward enforcing discipline, others fear it could alienate supporters and deepen divisions.

This decision comes at a critical time for the NPP, as the party seeks to rebuild following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The expulsion of high-profile members and their supporters may present new challenges in the party’s efforts to strengthen its base and regain electoral momentum.

As the dust settles, the expelled members’ next steps and potential political affiliations will be closely watched, potentially influencing the constituency’s political future.
