Ghana School of Law SRC urges peace, integrity, and accountability ahead of elections

As Ghanaians prepare for the December 7 national elections, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Ghana School of Law has released a comprehensive statement emphasising the importance of peaceful participation, electoral integrity, and national unity.

The SRC’s message, addressed to all Ghanaians, highlighted the role of elections in showcasing Ghana’s democratic maturity while urging citizens to approach this critical moment with a sense of collective responsibility.

Describing voting as a “powerful tool to shape the future,” the SRC encouraged all eligible voters to actively participate in the elections.

“Each ballot represents a voice in determining the leadership whose actions will impact generations to come,” the SRC stated. “Let us vote with integrity and with the collective interest of the nation at heart.”

The statement emphasised that the act of voting transcends individual preferences, serving as an opportunity to secure the nation’s long-term welfare.

Acknowledging Ghana’s history of peaceful elections, the SRC called for unity in the face of political diversity.

“Political affiliations may vary, but our shared identity as Ghanaians binds us together. Elections should serve as a unifying force rather than a source of division,” the SRC noted.

It urged all political parties, candidates, and their supporters to avoid provocative actions and inflammatory rhetoric that could escalate tensions.

The SRC condemned all forms of electoral malpractice, including vote-buying, intimidation, and ballot tampering, calling them threats to the democratic process.

“As aspiring legal professionals, we believe in upholding the rule of law and justice. Electoral misconduct undermines public trust and the credibility of the elections,” the statement said.

The SRC appealed to key stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and the media, to prioritise transparency and fairness in their roles.

“Security agencies must protect the rights of every voter, while the media must maintain professionalism in their reportage,” the SRC said. It also urged Ghanaians to use social media responsibly, cautioning against the spread of unverified information that could incite panic or confusion.

The SRC reminded citizens that their democratic responsibilities extend beyond voting.

“We call on all Ghanaians to remain active participants in governance by holding elected officials accountable,” the SRC emphasized. “Our vigilance is key to ensuring that leaders fulfil their promises and prioritise national development.”

Concluding its statement, the SRC called on Ghanaians to uphold the nation’s reputation as a beacon of democracy on the continent.

“Together, let us inspire future generations to value the power of their voice and vote,” the SRC declared, reaffirming its belief in the enduring strength of Ghana’s democracy.

The SRC’s appeal serves as a timely reminder of the collective effort required to safeguard the peace, integrity, and unity that define Ghana’s democratic identity.
