The Ghana Police Service’s Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) has begun investigations into a fatal road accident that left seven people dead near Obretema, along the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred around 4:30 am on Saturday when a VIP bus, with registration number GR 7632-24, travelling from Tamale to Accra, collided head-on with a fuel tanker (registration number UE 9644-22). The tanker reportedly veered into the bus’s lane, leading to the deadly crash.
According to eyewitnesses, five males and two females died instantly due to the impact, which caused both the tanker and bus to flip over and land in a ditch. Many others on board the bus sustained serious injuries.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service arrived at the scene to rescue survivors and recover the bodies of the deceased.
The bodies have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital mortuary, while injured passengers were rushed to the same hospital for medical attention.
ADO1 Opare Akonnor, spokesperson for the Suhum Fire Service, recounted the swift response: “We received a distress call around 4:03 am and immediately dispatched our team. We managed to rescue several passengers, though the exact number is still being verified.”
The accident caused traffic disruptions on the highway, but police officers, with assistance from passersby, worked to manage the situation and clear the road. Towing services were called in to remove the wreckage of both the bus and the fuel tanker.
Police are calling on the public, especially families expecting relatives travelling along the Tamale-Accra route, to visit the Suhum Government Hospital for identification purposes as investigations continue.
