19 More Democracy Hub Protesters granted bail

19 protesters from the Democracy Hub group have been granted bail by the Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday, October 9, following their arrest during a demonstration.

The court set bail at GH¢20,000 for each of the accused, with two sureties required per person.

Earlier in the week, 21 other protesters were granted bail on Monday, October 7, after their lawyers successfully appealed the Accra Circuit Court’s initial decision to remand them.

The appeal, made at the High Court, allowed the release of the first group, bringing the total number of protesters granted bail so far to 40.

Lawyers for the remaining 19 protesters had sought their release on Tuesday at the High Court but faced resistance from the Attorney General’s office, which led to the case being adjourned to Wednesday.

In response, the defence team applied again for bail at the Circuit Court, and the judge approved the application, allowing their release. Among those granted bail is Ralph Williams, a prominent figure among the demonstrators.

Meanwhile, the legal proceedings are ongoing for another group of 12 protesters, whose legal team is also expected to request bail shortly. The outcome of that hearing remains pending.

However, not all protesters have been released. Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a key leader of the Democracy Hub group, was once again denied bail.

Barker-Vormawor has been at the forefront of the group’s activism, and his detention has drawn significant attention amid concerns over the legal handling of the protesters.

The protesters were arrested in connection with their participation in a Democracy Hub demonstration, which law enforcement authorities claim violated certain legal and security regulations.
