The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended 184 members in the Yendi constituency for alleged violations of the party’s constitution.
The decision, effective December 26, 2024, was unanimously taken during an expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting on December 23, 2024.
According to Alhaji Baba Gazali, Chairman of the NPP in Yendi, the suspensions followed thorough deliberations on numerous complaints from party members. The infractions cited include:
- Contesting as independent candidates against the party’s officially elected parliamentary candidate.
- Declaring support for or joining another political party.
- Supporting independent candidates in the December 7, 2024, elections in the Yendi constituency.
- Refusing to work for the party during the recent presidential and parliamentary elections.
The leadership highlighted that the party’s constitution mandates the automatic forfeiture of membership for individuals who engage in such activities.
The suspensions were carried out in line with provisions of the NPP constitution, which allow for punitive actions, including suspension and expulsion, against members found guilty of misconduct. While the suspended members face further enquiries by the party’s Disciplinary Committee, expulsion remains a potential outcome for those found culpable.
The NPP leadership underscored the importance of discipline and adherence to the party’s rules to foster unity amidst the post-election challenges. The suspensions have been communicated to the party’s national and regional leadership, as well as the general public.
Alhaji Gazali reiterated the party’s commitment to upholding its values and maintaining internal cohesion as it navigates its path forward.
