Zipline Drones Cut Maternal Deaths by 56.4% in Ashanti Region

A new study has confirmed that Zipline’s drone delivery system has helped reduce maternal deaths by a staggering 56.4% in Ghana’s Ashanti Region between 2017 and 2022.

The joint research, conducted by Ghana Health Service (GHS) and Zipline, examined healthcare data from 191 health facilities. It found that facilities served by Zipline saw a dramatic drop in maternal mortality, thanks to faster access to life-saving medications and improved emergency response.

Zipline’s on-demand delivery of essential medical supplies like blood, oxytocin, and anti-snake venom played a major role in reducing emergency delays and increasing trust in the healthcare system.

The improved logistics led to:

These improvements meant more women gave birth in clinics with skilled supervision—one of the biggest contributors to lower maternal deaths.

Before Zipline, health centres in the region often faced medicine shortages, causing unnecessary referrals and delayed care.

Now, thanks to quick drone deliveries, patients and providers alike say the system feels more reliable. Healthcare workers also reported cost savings on transportation and fewer emergency transfers.

“By collaborating with partners like Zipline, we’re ensuring that all Ghanaians get the help they need, no matter where they live,” said Susana Nkrumah, District Health Director for Sekyere Central.

With global supply chains under pressure, Ghana’s investment in drone logistics offers a model for resilient, tech-powered healthcare in Africa.

“Zipline’s mission is to make sure no life is lost because a medicine didn’t arrive on time,” said Daniel Kwaku Merki, Zipline Ghana’s country head.
