The Majority Caucus in Parliament has projected that the minority will remain in opposition for an extended period, arguing that their criticism of the previous government lacks credibility due to its own economic mismanagement.
The majority contends that the economic challenges inherited from the Akufo-Addo administration remain a pressing concern for Ghanaians. They question the minority’s aggressive stance against the current government, which has been in office for just two months.
During a heated parliamentary debate on former President John Mahama’s State of the Nation Address, Deputy Majority Leader Kweku Ricketts-Hagan took aim at the borrowing practices of the Akufo-Addo government.
He asserted that reckless borrowing and fiscal irresponsibility contributed significantly to Ghana’s current economic challenges.
“From President Nana Akufo-Addo on his state of the nation, the last one was quite laughable that we should make sure we don’t default. A president who has presided over overborrowing, who has unilaterally decided not to pay its debts from 2022, who was not paying any interest, was telling us, was telling President Mahama that he should not default,” Ricketts-Hagan argued.
Ricketts-Hagan further criticised the minority for its vocal opposition, urging them to be measured in their approach.
“You have found your voices early, and you have to take your time. Ghanaians have not forgotten. You will be in opposition for a very long time,” he cautioned.
The exchange highlights the deepening political divide as the new government navigates Ghana’s economic challenges while the opposition intensifies its scrutiny. With Parliament set to debate critical fiscal policies in the coming months, tensions between the Majority and Minority are expected to escalate, shaping the political landscape ahead of future elections.
